Granite Technical Institute
What is the Granite Technical Institute (GTI)?
The Granite Technical Institute provides hands-on technical education and training to 9-12th graders.
Most of the classes are concurrent enrollment (a college class offered to high school students) allowing students to easily earn high school and college credit. Some of the programs provide a pathway to certification by high school graduation (i.e. In the Health Science program students can become a certified C.N.A. by high school graduation). Students who attend the GTI receive specialized training in their field that will help them get into programs of higher learning or receive a professional job. |

What programs are available at GTI?
GTI offers classes in the following programs: Agriculture Science, Education Academy, Aviation, Biotechnology, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Criminal Justice, Health Science, Information Technology, Technology and Engineering, and Academies of Business. 9th graders have the option to fulfill their Biology or Physics credit at the GTI. This option is a good alternative for those who prefer a hands-on learning environment. To see what classes are offered in each program, click here. |
How do I enroll in the program?
Students must first have a 2.5 GPA & 2.5 CPA in order to apply to any GTI program. To apply, visit your counselor in the counseling center to get an application. Once the application is complete and signed by the student and guardian, return it to the counseling center for approval. After approval, students and counselors will work out their schedule to include GTI classes. Students must arrange their own transportation to and from Skyline High School where they will catch the bus to the GTI. |

Why should I attend the GTI?
There are many who think the GTI is just for those who can't or don't want to go to college. This is false. The GTI is meant to prepare you for college and a career. Think about it. When you apply to college and you put down that you already are certified in a field like nursing, wouldn't that make you a better student compared to someone who hasn't? Yep, it would! Colleges are looking for students who take advantage of opportunities and experiences. Doing well in school is important, but if you don't participate in opportunities, service, and leadership you won't look that great to a college.
The GTI can help you get ahead in your field. If you are looking to enter into the medical field, many colleges require some patient hours before acceptance into the program. The GTI will give you patient hours. Dream of working in animation at Pixar? The skills and the experience provided at the GTI will help you get there earlier than if you waited till college.
Maybe you don't know what you want to be yet. The GTI is an inexpensive way to explore careers. We've had students enter into the medical program only to find out that they can't handle looking at blood. It helped them realize that they needed to find a different career path. You can certainly explore careers in college, but it is expensive! Colleges can also kick you out if you spend too long working on a degree. Explore and try new things at the GTI. You might find a talent for something that you've never tried before.
Some students attend the GTI and receive certification in a field, but don't actually want to continue in college or for the rest of their lives. That's totally fine. In college they can use their certification to get a job to help pay for their college expenses. Working as a dental hygienist will pay more than working at a fast-food restaurant.
There are so many reasons why you should attend the GTI. The better question to ask is, "Why wouldn't you?".
